OK, so heatwaves and hosepipe bans mean that warm winter headgear isn’t exactly the first thing on your mind – no pun. But Miuccia Prada took Autumn/Winter literally when devising the finishing touches for her latest Miu Miu show, with nearly every look topped with a variation on the shearling-lined survivalist staple of the trapper cap. At least, that’s what America calls it – many others revert to the Russian and dub it a ushanka, while our British, Sherlock Holmesian variant has been called a deerstalker since the late 19th century. There are design differences – the deerstalker sports two brims, front and back (it’s sometimes called a ‘fore-and-aft’ cap for that reason) while the trapper can sometimes be cross-bred with a baseball cap, although that possibly has doomsday prepper connotations of ammo-stockpiling and nuclear bunkering. Prada’s proffering, in her oft-imitated but actually inimitable style, was a mash-up of all the above, patching together Baker Street-worthy tweeds with techy nylons and trimmings of shearling. On a few, there was even the added genius touch of a great chunk of crystal embroidery in Queen Mother pastels of blush, primrose or periwinkle blue. Prada herself dubbed these hats “enriched … but not vulnerable”. They’re not in Miu Miu stores until September, mind, so don’t lose your head over them yet.
